Helping not-for-profits get value from AI

See how the National AI Centre is supporting not-for-profit organisations use artificial intelligence to reduce admin and focus more on service delivery

Infoxchange is a not-for-profit social enterprise that supports thousands of community organisations across Australia to use technology effectively.

Through a partnership with the National Artificial Intelligence Centre (NAIC), they are helping organisations understand AI and use it safely.

What not-for-profits need

Not-for-profit (NFP) organisations face growing demand with limited time and resources.

Many already use AI to:

  • draft documents
  • write grant applications
  • summarise meetings
  • create content

But there is a gap:

  • how to use AI safely
  • how to manage risks such as data privacy and bias

What the partnership delivers

The National AI Plan commits to ensuring all Australians benefit from AI.

To support this, NAIC partnered with Infoxchange to help NFP organisations use AI safely. Support is delivered through the Infoxchange Digital Transformation Hub.

It includes:

  • tailored learning on responsible AI
  • guidance aligned to the Government’s Guidance for AI Adoption
  • tools to support decision-making and governance
  • access to a peer learning community

How it's being used

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation worked with Infoxchange to strengthen its approach to AI.

With this support, the organisation:

  • built foundations in AI readiness, governance and literacy
  • gained confidence to test AI tools
  • maintained strong safeguards for child safety and data privacy

This enabled a shift from early exploration to safe, practical use of AI, helping to:

  • reduce time spent on repetitive tasks
  • improve access to information and insights
  • support decision-making
  • create content more efficiently

Why it matters

Infoxchange supports more than 38,000 community organisations across Australia. Through this partnership, NAIC is helping make practical AI resources available at scale.

This helps NFP organisations:

  • build confidence
  • manage risks like data privacy
  • move from testing to safe, everyday use

Sophie Souchon, Digital Transformation Team Manager, InfoXchange speaking:

At InfoXchange, we’re dedicated to supporting thousands of nonforprofit organisations across Australia to better understand and use technology.

There are more than 60,000 nonforprofits in Australia. They support people in crisis, strengthen communities, and respond to growing and complex needs.

Across Australia, nonforprofits are already using AI in everyday ways. Drafting documents, writing grant applications, summarising meetings, creating marketing content, and managing admin. These tools take some of the pressure off, freeing up the staff and volunteers to spend less time on repetitive tasks, and more time working with people and delivering services.

We bring these together through the InfoXchange Digital Transformation Hub, a place where nonforprofits can build their digital and AI capability, including access to learning content, supported through our partnership with the National AI Centre.

Chee Ng, Digital Product Lead, Alannah and Madeline Foundation speaking:

About a year ago, we started exploring how AI could help us make better use of data at scale.

With the support of InfoXchange, we built strong foundations in AI readiness, governance, and AI literacy, so we could experiment safely and responsibly. That gave our team the confidence to test, learn and iterate while staying grounded in our responsibilities around child safety and data privacy.

We are also grateful for the broader community through InfoXchange APAC Community Hub, learning from peers on a similar journey. Now, we are moving from experimentation into real-world use.

Sophie Souchon, Digital Transformation Team Manager, InfoXchange speaking:

When AI takes care of repetitive tasks, staff and volunteers can spend more time supporting people and communities.

With small teams, tight budgets, and growing demand, nonprofits need tools that genuinely ease pressure, and that’s where AI is proving useful. When organisations have access to the right learning, AI stops feeling risky, and starts feeling useful.
