Myth: AI will replace your staff

AI is a task assistant, not a staff replacement. Most AI tools help people complete parts of their job faster. They can draft text, analyse information or organise data – while people still make decisions and interact with customers and clients.

Organisations usually use AI to remove repetitive work. This helps teams focus on high-value activities like customer service, sales and problem-solving.

Myth: AI is only for large corporations

AI is already built into many everyday business tools. Accounting software, marketing platforms, booking systems and document editors increasingly include AI features. Organisations of any size can benefit – particularly small businesses with limited administrative capacity.

Using AI today is like when organisations first started using computers or cloud storage. It’s a productivity tool, not a specialist project.

Myth: AI is expensive

Many AI features may already come with existing software subscriptions or are available at low monthly cost. For most teams, the main investment is learning how to use AI tools effectively.  

AI costs are often quickly offset by:

  • reduced administration time
  • fewer errors
  • faster customer responses.

For many organisations, AI use starts as a way to save time each day rather than making major system changes.

Myth: AI needs technical expertise

Many AI systems are designed for everyday people. They work by typing or speaking to them – like writing an email or asking a question.

Like many digital tools, using AI is a skill that improves with practice. As people become familiar with it, they get better at judging results and identifying mistakes.

Unless you have a special need, you don’t need to build AI systems or hire specialists to start using AI safely and effectively.

Myth: AI always gets things right

Think of AI as a junior member of your team – smart and helpful but lacking context. It can improve productivity but can also make mistakes. You are always accountable.

Good practices include:

  • checking outputs
  • verifying facts
  • keeping people involved in decisions which impact staff, customers or the community.

Myth: Using AI means sharing confidential information

You should treat AI like any other online service, following normal data handling practices.

Only enter information you would normally store in a reputable online service.

Myth: AI is a future technology and not relevant yet

AI is already being used by around 30 per cent of Australian organisations (NAIC AI adoption data 2025 Q4). People are experimenting with AI tools to improve productivity, sometimes even before they’re formally implemented into work processes.

In most cases, uptake is gradual. Teams start by using it to automate small tasks like drafting emails, summarising documents or analysing feedback.

Teams that experiment earlier tend to build skills and confidence faster. Those who wait may face a steeper learning curve later.

Understanding the limitations of AI can help you use it effectively and responsibly.

Generative AI ‘hallucinations’

GenAI systems will typically give an answer even when they don’t have reliable information. Responses could sound convincing but are wrong.

Bias and discrimination

AI learns from the data it’s trained on. If data has gaps or bias, the outputs may reflect those patterns, reinforcing stereotypes or unfair assumptions.

Logic and ethical judgement

AI doesn’t have reliable reasoning and can’t make ethical decisions. It may interpret instructions differently from what you may have told it.

Limited originality

AI models generate outputs by recombining existing data patterns and still need human creativity to produce genuinely new or strategic work.
