How we collect data on AI adoption

Understand how we gather and interpret data for the AI adoption tracker

We work with an independent research provider, Fifth Quadrant, to design and run surveys for the AI adoption tracker.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across Australia take part in the surveys. Each month, Fifth Quadrant collects and analyses responses from 400 completed surveys.

The surveys have run since May 2024, and responses may be from different SMEs over time.

Respondents

Business owners or decision-makers from SMEs respond to the surveys. Businesses may have:

  • 0–4 employees
  • 5–19 employees
  • 20–199 employees
  • 200–500 employees.

Participating SMEs come from a range of industry sectors. We use accredited research panels that ensure the sample represents all businesses across states and territories.

The data is then weighted by industry, location and number of employees. This helps reflect the national distribution of businesses.

Definitions

In the survey, we define AI as technology that allows computers and machines to simulate intelligent behaviour. This includes the ability to perform tasks that typically need human intelligence, such as:

  • recognising patterns
  • making decisions
  • solving problems.

Data limitations

When there are fewer than 10 data points, we’ve noted there is insufficient data to display in the dashboards.

We show industry-specific data on a quarterly basis.

What we ask SMEs

The surveys ask SMEs 4 questions about their AI adoption. They include questions about:

  • levels of awareness and adoption of AI technologies among SMEs
  • types of AI applications SMEs are using
  • challenges that SMEs are facing in adopting AI technologies
  • business outcomes that SMEs are achieving through AI adoption.
