Working with Australian startups and scaleups over the past several years, I’ve seen the strength of the technology being built here and the ambition of the people behind it.
I’ve also seen how difficult the next stage of growth can be.
A company may have a strong product and a clear understanding of the problem it solves. But securing an opportunity with a large business requires more than good technology. Founders need to understand how enterprise buyers assess risk, make procurement decisions and determine whether a potential supplier is ready to deliver at scale.
That knowledge can be difficult to gain without established relationships or a seat at the table.
Creating pathways to enterprise customers
Launched by the Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy, the Hon Dr Andrew Charlton MP, the Buy Australian AI Partnership Program is delivered by Stone & Chalk. The program will help Australian AI companies strengthen their commercial capability, grow and scale, and become more competitive when pursuing enterprise customers.
The program includes two accelerator tracks tailored to companies at different stages of growth. Through the program, participants will work with partners who can provide direct access to expertise, information and networks that are often difficult for emerging companies to reach.
Bringing industry to the table
This initiative is more than an accelerator. It is a collaboration between Australian AI companies, major enterprise organisations and industry leaders who share a common goal: helping more Australian technology reach the customers and markets it needs to grow. Founding Enterprise Partners ANZ, CBA, Cuscal, NAB and Westpac Banking Group will provide valuable enterprise perspectives and connections throughout the program.
That effort is strengthened by support from Gradient Institute, COBA, ABA, the Insurance Council of Australia, AIIA, FinTech Australia, CEDA, Superteam Australia (Solana) and MYOB, creating a network that spans Australia's technology, financial services and business communities.
Why partnerships matter
That partnership model is at the heart of the program.
The participating partners understand how large businesses assess technology, manage risk and engage new suppliers. They can help founders better understand what enterprise customers need to see, from security and governance to integration, reliability and a clear business case.
This is more than general business advice. It is an opportunity for Australian AI companies to learn directly from the people working inside complex enterprise environments, test their assumptions and prepare for the expectations they will face as they grow.
The partners also benefit. They gain greater visibility of the technology being developed across Australia and new opportunities to connect with local companies that may be able to solve problems within their business.
Those connections matter because Australian AI companies need customers as much as they need capital, advice and technical expertise.
Enterprise partnerships can help a company prove its technology, build credibility and develop a track record. One successful customer relationship can become the foundation for further growth in Australia and overseas.
From innovation to economic opportunity
Assistant Minister Charlton has spoken about the importance of building Australia’s AI ecosystem and ensuring more of the economic value created by AI stays here. That means supporting Australian companies to create jobs, build intellectual property and develop capability that contributes to our economic resilience and sovereign capability.
It also means creating stronger pathways between Australian innovation and Australian demand.
The Buy Australian AI Partnership Program is designed to build those pathways. It brings together Australian AI companies, enterprise partners and industry expertise to address one of the most persistent barriers to growth: turning strong technology into commercial opportunity.
Australia already has talented founders building capable AI solutions. This program is about helping more of them become ready to work with large customers, compete for major opportunities and take Australian AI further.
